3 Long-Time Filipino Beauty Myths that Haunted Us Growing Up

By Ysabel Vitangcol on October 31, 2024

Let’s face it – we Filipinos are quite hardcore when it comes to sticking to pamahiins, or superstitions. We’re here to uncover the truth on the unpopular regimens we grew up with – and share what can be done better.

1. Brush your hair 100 times a day for shiny hair

Admit it – we’ve done it at least once in our lives! While there’s no scientific evidence that proves such a claim, the best way to achieve shiny hair is to have good hair health. Our Hair Perfecting Kit, which includes MIRIQA® Hair Supplement (60 Capsules), our Belo Thick and Shiny Shampoo, Conditioner, and the Belo Hair Comb, can help with that. Not only does it increase hair growth, shine and strength, but also helps reduce hair loss.

2. Sunscreen is anti-darkening / morena compexions don’t need sunscreen

This is a big, big no-no! As a matter of fact, sunscreen is one of the most integral parts of skincare! Best applied both in and outdoors, sunscreen helps slow down ageing thanks to its protection from harmful UV rays. Did you know that darker skin tones are also susceptible to sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and photoaging without SPF? Don’t think twice about skipping the SPF!

Belo has different types of sunblocks for you to choose from, as well as the ones best for your skin type. It’s still best to ask your Belo doctor what may suit best for your skin, as skincare is not a one-size fits all!

3. Applying menstrual blood to your face will result to great skin

Not only is this unhygienic, there are no scientific claims that menstrual blood is the answer to your best skin yet. Great skin comes with proper skincare, treatments and other supporting factors such as lifestyle and nutrition; and health conditions such as PCOS. Acne, for example, is one common issue amongst patients who are struggling to get good skin. (Read: What are the Common Types of Acne and its Triggers?)

Belo, too, has a wide range of treatments to look over, which includes facials and peels. The newest Q-Facial is best for all skin types, which integrate three different formulas that help exfoliate, cleanse and rejuvenate the skin.

We have clinics located around Metro Manila, Pampanga, Cebu and Davao! Belo’s newest and flagship branch, NEXA, is NOW open, located in One Ayala, Makati City! To set an appointment, give us a call at 8819-BELO (2356) or book your appointment here.
