Hyperhidrosis: How Belo Can Treat Excess Sweating

By Ysabel Vitangcol on May 20, 2024

Us Pinoys are used to the hot climate in the Philippines, so the feeling of basking in humidity and sweat is normal. However, apart from reasons caused by the weather, other individuals sweat more than usual. What causes this? Here’s what you need to know and how Belo can help, with Dr. Regina Gabrielle Gatan, Associate Physician of Belo Clark!

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis, commonly known as excessive sweating, is a condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It can be a source of significant discomfort and embarrassment, impacting daily activities and quality of life.

“Sweating is the body’s mechanism to cool itself. The nervous system automatically triggers sweat glands when your body temperature rises. Sweating also occurs, especially on your palms, when you’re nervous,” Dr. Gatan explains.

“Primary hyperhidrosis is caused by faulty nerve signals that trigger eccrine sweat glands to become overactive. It usually affects the palms, soles, underarms and sometimes the face. “

While there is no medical cause for this type of hydrosis, Dr. Gatan shared that it can run in families.

“Meanwhile, secondary hyperhidrosis is caused by an underlying medical condition or by taking certain medications, such as pain relievers, antidepressants, and some diabetes and hormonal medications. This type of hyperhidrosis may cause sweating all over the body. Medical conditions that might cause it include diabetes, menopause, hot flashes, thyroid problems, some types of cancer, nervous system disorders and infections.”

How Belo Can Help

Treatments such as Sweatox (sweat + botox) block the nerves that trigger the sweat glands. When treating sweaty underarms, Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscle around the sweat glands which squeeze these and release the perspiration. The whole process, which is totally tolerable, lasts for about an hour (or less!). Because you don’t sweat as much, you also end up decreasing the need to apply deodorant, which rubs against the skin and causes darkening. Dr. Gatan shares the rundown of this treatment:

“Each affected area of your body will need several injections. It may take a few days to notice the results. To retain the effect, you’ll likely need repeat treatments about every six months.”

Patients also have the option to do Renova Hyperhidrosis, but this will also depend on the doctor’s recommendation.
