What You Need to Know About Ulthera

By Ysabel Vitangcol on March 27, 2019

Everyone is talking about Ulthera. It’s become the buzzword for anti-aging, touted as the ultimate procedure for resetting the clock at least five years. Hollywood A-listers and local celebrities swear by it.

Your friends want to have it done, and are encouraging you to consider the treatment yourself. None of them can really tell you what Ulthera entails, but what you’re told is enough to make you want to know more. Read on to find out if this anti-aging treatment is really for you!

It uses MFU-V (Micro Focus Ultrasound with Visualization) technology.

The youthful look and radiance of our skin is mostly dependent on two important elements: collagen and elastin, the key proteins that gives skin its structure. As we age, collagen and elastin production slows down, resulting in less defined jawlines, drooping eyelids, sagging cheeks, and fine lines and wrinkles.

Ulthera reverses these signs of aging by using MFU-V (Micro Focus Ultrasound with Visualization) system to awaken the lethargic collagen in your skin, and trigger a high-speed aging rewind. This treatment goes deep into the skin, contracting different layers for a more targeted treatment. (Think of it as “shrink-wrapping” your face from the inside to tighten sagging skin.) The procedure causes micro-wounding, which startles collagen and elastin into reproducing, all without cutting or causing disruptions to the skin.

It’s ideal for those who are looking for the ultimate lift.

Because it boosts collagen production, Ulthera causes the skin to plump, tighten, and lift itself back to elasticity levels of your 25-year-old self. It’s perfect for addressing any loss of firmness or elasticity on the cheeks, the jawline, the neck, and even the brow area. After an Ulthera session, hollowed-out edges soften, the curves of the cheeks are reset, droopy lids are lifted, and double chins and sagging jowls disappear. Ulthera also addresses wrinkling and sagging in the neck and décolletage.

It can be done on patients aged 18 to 68 (or even older)

Ulthera as an anti-aging treatment can be done for patients 30 years old and above, according to Dr. Vicki Belo, It’s best to start out with the procedure as a preventive measure. “You lose one percent of collagen for every year you’re alive. When you’re born, you have 100 percent collagen. When you’re 32, that means you have 32 percent less collagen,” she cautions. “There’s this thing called ‘age spurts’ where you won’t age for four years, then suddenly you’ll age four years in one year. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and Ulthera is one of the best ways to do it.”

The younger set are also eligible for the procedure but for more aesthetic reasons. “We do Ulthera for those ages 18 to 25, but that’s not for aging. It’s to shrink their faces. K-beauty is the rage right now. So these young people want to make their faces look tiny.”

You will experience slight—but tolerable—discomfort

To provide the most comfortable experience possible, our doctors usually apply a topical anesthesia to the area of treatment, but can also sedate the patient upon request. There are advantages that come with sedation. “When a patient is sleeping, I can do more ‘pulses’ [using the machine] and I am not limited by the patient’s pain tolerance,” explains Dr. Belo.

Like most of our non-invasive treatments, there is very little to no downtime after a treatment so you can go back to your regular routine right after. Some mild and short-lived side effects, like redness, may occur, but this should disappear within a few hours. Swelling and mild bruising may also occur, but these typically subside within a few days of treatment.

Not all Ulthera treatments are equal

According to Dr. Belo, the treatment is best done with the original Ultherapy-branded machine. Any other machine may be a very poor, ineffective copy or not even a machine for Ulthera at all.

Optimal results are seen within three months

“You’ll see new collagen reposition and new elastin reposition in three to six months,” says Dr. Belo. Although, some of our patients see a slight lift and less sagging immediately after the treatment. Results usually last 12 to 18 months. This means you only need to go for this ultimate anti-aging treatment once a year!

You can combine Ulthera with V-Contour

If you really want a slimmer, smaller face, Dr. Belo recommends pairing Ulthera with V-Contour. This is an injectable procedure that dissolves fat and slims down rounded cheeks and double chins!
