Why More Men Are Using Botox To Stop Excess Sweat

By Ysabel Vitangcol on December 23, 2017

Although perspiring is a normal fact of life, too much sweat can cost you more than just a good shirt—just imagine showing up at a job interview or hot date with unsightly damp spots all over your clothing! And while men can easily chalk up laugh lines and forehead wrinkles as the distinguished marks of a well-lived life, it isn’t as easy to shrug off embarrassing shirt stains and sticky handshakes from excessive sweating.

The Unlikely Hero

Luckily, Botox can save men (and even women!) from excessive sweat problems. More than just filling and smoothing out wrinkles, this quickie treatment can also control your sweat glands’ production. “It can be used for Hyperhidrosis, usually for the armpits,” explains Dr. Joey Muñoz, associate physician at Belo Rockwell. “After applying anesthesia, we inject the Botox into a certain plane in the skin that inhibits the sweat glands, so there’s either minimal sweating or none at all.”

It’s actually more common than you realize! Case in point: TV Host Robi Domingo gets Botox for sweat-free underarms!

Don’t Sweat It

So if antiperspirants don’t really work for you or if you have a special occasion that you need to attend, you’ll be relieved to know that this procedure allows you to say goodbye to humiliating pit stains in as little as a week and the results can last for months.

“It takes effect within 5-7 days and you can do it every 4-6 months,” says Dr. Muñoz. However, if you hit the gym a lot or get injected during summer, your sweat-free armpits or hands might need touching up a little sooner.

“The effects last longer during the colder months,” adds Dr. Muñoz. “Some lifestyle choices, like diet pills or working out, may ‘use up’ the effect of Botox much faster because the person’s sympathetic nervous system is very active.”
