5 Common Myths about Fillers, Debunked

By Ysabel Vitangcol on October 19, 2020

Some believe that fillers are only for people in their 50s, or that they’re harmful to the body, or that they’ll make you look “fake.” Spoiler alert: None of these are true.

Today, we’re clearing up the most common misconceptions about dermal fillers, starting with these five myths.

MYTH 1: Fillers will make you look “fake” or overly “retokada.”

Not when done right!

For any cosmetic procedure, it’s very important that you go to a well-trained and experienced practitioner with extensive knowledge of the treatment. Three out of eight Allergan Medical Institute trainers in the Philippines for Fillers and BOTOX® treatments are Belo doctors, and Belo has been the earliest user of these treatments in the country. Last 2019, we were awarded No. 1 user of BOTOX® and Fillers in the Singapore-Malaysia-Philippines region. Choose wisely! *wink*

MYTH 2: Botox and fillers are the same.

Wrong.

They are both injectable treatments, but they are entirely different. BOTOX® is a treatment done to relax expression muscles and help lessen the appearance of lines and wrinkles. It can also make the face less angular when injected into the masseter muscles (AKA the jaw area). Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are done to add or restore volume where you need it. Fillers can be done to plump up lips, cheeks, or reshape an area such as nose or chin. BOTOX® and fillers cannot replace one other, but they work well together to achieve an overall profile upgrade.

MYTH 3: The more, the merrier.

Big NO!

If it won’t harmonize well with your overall facial features, your doctor’s responsibility is to give you only the right amount of filler, even if you beg for overly-plumped lips à la Kylie Jenner. This is why it’s important to choose a doctor that is not only a qualified practitioner for fillers, but also has proven aesthetic sensibilities and can provide you the best results. At Belo, we always aim for natural-looking results, so you can leave our clinic still looking like yourself—just more refreshed and rejuvenated. When it comes to fillers, subtle changes with big impact are better. (Most of our patients are into baby lip fillers!)

MYTH 3: One filler is all-purpose.

Wrong.

There are several types of dermal fillers for different concerns and areas. “In the past, we used to inject fillers [that are] silicone-based or foil. But now, there are different types of hyaluronic acid [fillers] depending on the needs. For example, the type of hyaluronic acid we use for lip injection is softer compared to the type of hyaluronic acid that we would use for the temple or cheeks.” said the late Dr. March Babaran in a 2018 article. Belo has different types of fillers for different skin concerns. Check them out here.

MYTH 4: Fillers are very painful.

Wrong again!

Minimal swelling, redness, and discomfort may be experienced, but the pain is definitely tolerable. A local anesthetic may be applied to numb the area before the treatment to ensure patient comfort while injecting the filler. And patients can return to their normal routine right after the procedure!

If you’re considering having Dermal Fillers done, now is the best time!
