The Thin Line Between Self Love and Narcissism

By Ysabel Vitangcol on February 11, 2019

In a world where “selfies” are abound, how do you distinguish self love and narcissism? Narcissism according to the dictionary, is excessive interest in or admiration of yourself and your physical appearance. The key word being excessive.

So how do you know that you are merely loving yourself and not going overboard? Is it self love or narcissism?

When you love yourself, you do so because you want your love tank to be full. Loving yourself in a healthy way allows you to be able to love other people. It is self-care and self-awareness without losing your real sense of self. People with narcissistic tendencies, however, have an illusion of grandeur about themselves that they lose their sense of empathy and live in a fantasy world that revolves around them.

How then do you healthily love yourself? Focus on loving yourself as a means to uplift your self-esteem. In doing so, you get to know yourself better and improve as a person. After all, you should always be on the quest to be a better version of yourself.

  1. Take care of yourself physically. Get enough sleep, eat a balanced diet, work out and take care of the biggest organ of your body – your skin. Go and get facials, body treatments and massages. And don’t forget to exfoliate not just your face but also your body! Belo’s Wet and Dry Dermabrasion involves exfoliation and peptide infused serums. This treatment will help you attain an even and flawless complexion all over. Book a session now and let the self-love begin!
  2. Take care of yourself mentally. Meditate in the morning. Read, read, read! Listen to enriching podcasts and avoid binging on shows that add no value to your life. Talk to inspiring people. Sharpen your mind with challenging activities. Learn new things!
  3. Take care of yourself emotionally. Avoid toxic people. Give yourself the time and the opportunity to heal from your emotional scars. Be kind to yourself. Focus on being grateful instead of worrying and being burdened with guilt. Attract nothing but good vibes by imbibing a positive outlook in life.

Now, go ahead and take that “selfie” (and mix it up with some “groufie”) as long as you take to heart that it is possible to do some self-love without being selfish.
