This is, in no way, going to be a scathing indictment of coffee. Coffee will always be the quintessential A.M. pick-me-up. But it’s easy to have too much—or to chug that cold brew like a college student at beer pong—and then, the palpitations begin. You can feel your heart beating from inside your chest. Your mind races, and your fingers are shaking a little. Now, you’re too stimulated, and there’s no way to reverse it. If coffee is too strong for you, then here’s a new alternative: matcha milk. Here are four reasons you should stock up on matcha milk for your next work week.
1. Matcha is a great antioxidant.
According to TIME Magazine, matcha “contains a class of antioxidants called catechins. Matcha is high in a catechin called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which is believed to have cancer-fighting effects on the body.” Green tea, which matcha is, has also been shown to lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels.
2. It actually contains more caffeine than regular green tea.
Matcha is prepared differently from regular green tea—with matcha, the leaves are ground and dried to become powder. That means you’re getting the whole tea leaf in your drink.
According to the Mayo Clinic, regular green tea contains 28 milligrams of caffeine. By comparison, matcha can contain up to 70 milligrams (!) of caffeine, says nutritionist Keri Gans, RD in an interview with Women’s Health. So you don’t have to worry about still feeling groggy after having a cup.
3. Matcha milk blends tend to come with other nutritious ingredients.
What’s great about matcha is it’s the perfect base for a blend. This local creation by Seabuds La Union packs their matcha milk mix with MCT oil (great for memory and brain function), ashwagandha (to reduce stress and anxiety), coconut milk powder, and coconut sugar. There are tons of matcha milk mixes out there—you can even make your own!—so go ahead and get creative.
4. It tastes like dessert!
Matcha has been added to many great desserts: cheesecake, ice cream, sundaes, and more. So having a little taste of matcha in the morning can remind you of those sweet bites. It just might be the happy pill you need to start the day right. (And who says you can’t have dessert in the morning anyway?)
Nothing wrong with your cup of joe if you like it the way it is, but if you want to try something new for your WFH days, matcha milk is a good place to start. It’s healthy, delicious, and—bonus—pretty darn Instagrammable. Enjoy!
