5 Common Myths about Radiofrequency (RF) Treatments, Debunked

By Ysabel Vitangcol on January 14, 2021

If you’re curious about how celebrities maintain their youthful glow and toned physique all these years, there’s a big chance it’s with a little help from radiofrequency (RF) treatments. It’s known for various names depending on the machine being used, but the underlying principle of RF treatments is the use of nonablative (non-wounding) lasers to address certain concerns such as saggy skin, acne, scars and discoloration, and even cellulite. According to a study by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery, RF “differs from lasers in that it uses an electric current rather than a light source.” In the Philippines, RF treatments have been around for over a decade, but some people are still not sure about its safety or effectiveness. Today, we’re busting the top misconceptions about RF treatments so you can decide if it’s the right procedure for you.

Myth # 1: RF treatments are only meant for the face.

False! While RF works miracles on the face by targeting acne, scars, wrinkles, and even rosacea, RF treatments can also be done on other parts of the body, like “draped skin on the neck, loose skin on the stomach, … [and] it is also approved by the FDA to treat women’s pelvic floor regions”, says Dr. Kris Wusterhausen of The Resurge Clinic in Texas.

Here at Belo, we have Skin Reboot, which “uses radiofrequency and micro-current technology to address sagging, loose skin in the face and body” to encourage the natural formation collagen and elastin ”to help improve your skin tone, lessen fine lines, and further contour the targeted area.” According to Dr. Vicki Belo, the unique thing about it is the cream we use, which contains argan stem cells that are known for their hydrating and anti-aging properties.

Myth # 2: RF treatments have a long downtime.

Totally untrue! Most RF treatments have very minimal downtime—some have none at all. After the procedure, some patients may experience some redness or a little bit of swelling, but it usually goes away after an hour or two. For example, with Belo Skin Genius, patients will experience some swelling for a few minutes, but it won’t affect regular functions after the 40-minute session.

Myth # 3: RF treatments are unsafe.

Not true! According to the same Healthline article, “the form of RF radiation used during this procedure is similar to the type of radiation emitted from other common household devices like cell phones or WiFi” and “although the long-term effects of low energy radiation isn’t entirely known, there hasn’t been any conclusive evidence at this time that suggests that RF radiation poses a health risk to people.”

As long as the procedure is conducted in a safe environment by a trained expert, you can expect great results. Thermage FLX, for example, has become one of the most sought-after procedures to contour and smoothen the face, which celebrities love! It has no downtime and you can easily see the results after the session. The effects of the treatment could also last for over a year, depending on the patient’s age group and lifestyle.

Myth # 4: RF treatments are painful.

Not in all cases! It depends on your pain threshold, of course, but most patients share that aside from a slight tingling sensation, it wasn’t painful at all. Also, remember that RF treatments do not involve any scalpels in order to make cuts or incisions, so don’t let your fear of getting hurt keep you from going through with the procedure if you’re looking for clearer and brighter skin or a slimmer figure this year.

Myth # 5: RF treatments are just for older patients.

It’s for everyone! Okay, maybe not for kids (except for scars that need treatment), but anyone can get RF treatments depending on their needs. Whether you’re a mother of three in your late 40s or getting ready for your wedding in your 20s, you can find the right RF procedure for you. In fact, Belo Babies like Anne Curtis, Liza Soberano, Jennylyn Mercado, and more have tried RF treatments already.

For example, Belo Exilis is perfect for those who want to lose some unwanted inches on their body while encouraging collagen and elastin production for smoother skin. And unlike most laser treatments, Exilis actually cools the skin’s surface to lessen discomfort.
