Is Your Skin Type Permanent?

By Ysabel Vitangcol on October 29, 2024

Knowing whether you have oily, dry, sensitive, combination, or normal skin shapes the way you care for it. However, one question often arises: Is your skin type truly permanent, or does it change over time?

What determines your skin type?

Your skin type is primarily influenced by genetics, but it can also be shaped by environmental factors, lifestyle, and age. Here’s a look at the different types:

  • Oily Skin. Characterized by excess sebum production, leading to shine, larger pores, and a tendency for acne.
  • Dry Skin.  Often feels tight, looks dull, and can be prone to flaking or sensitivity due to insufficient sebum.
  • Combination Skin. Features both dry and oily areas, commonly an oily T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) with drier cheeks.
  • Normal Skin.  Balanced in oil and moisture, with a smooth texture and fewer visible concerns.

Is skin type static?

While your base skin type has a genetic component, it isn’t necessarily permanent. Here are factors that can influence changes in your skin type:

  • Aging. As we age, the skin’s natural oil production decreases, often leading oily skin types to become more balanced or even dry over time. Conversely, mature skin may become more sensitive.
  • Hormonal Fluctuations.  Hormones play a large role in skin type. Puberty, pregnancy, menstruation, and menopause can all cause shifts, often increasing oil production or triggering sensitivity.
  • Climate and Environment. Exposure to different climates can alter your skin’s behavior. For example, dry winter air may increase dryness, while humid climates can trigger oiliness.
  • Lifestyle and Habits. Diet, stress, sleep, and skincare routines can also influence skin type. For example, excessive use of drying products can lead to increased sebum production as the skin tries to balance itself.

Some changes in skin type are temporary and reversible. For example, if oily skin becomes dry due to harsh skincare products, switching to gentler options can help restore balance. However, age-related changes are often more permanent, as they are tied to structural shifts within the skin.

How to adapt to changing skin needs

Patients may also want to take into consideration products that support collagen and moisture retention as the get older (to help slow down ageing!).
